Weaving Steel
fiber art meets fine art
Knitting with metal has been a practice of mine for over ten years. This practice was birthed out of a period of physical limitation and isolation— a traumatic back injury that left me on bed rest for several months. Knitting was my coping tool for expression and soothing.
Shifting from softer, fibrous materials to steel wire offered visual communication of my body’s lived experience. I was able to create armor, as well as express the limitations my body has been confined to. Artistic making being the vehicle to hold these dualities has been a source of comfort, understanding and clarity.
As an artist and and licensed art therapist, my sculptural work is primarily informed by the intersections of history, identity, trauma and the body. Hand-knitted metal comes together in floating forms of armor. In these forms, I explore protection, limitation, pain, memory and embodiment.
